Choose the towel service you will provide to each guest, then calculate separately how much stock supports that service between washes. Airbnb strongly encourages a towel per guest among essential amenities, with more for larger groups and longer stays. It does not establish a universal two-bath-towel or three-rotation rule.

Maximum occupancy can inform a standing towel-stock policy. For a dated arrival, use the confirmed guest requirement and your chosen allowance.
Write the guest allowance by towel type
Specify bath towels, hand towels, washcloths and any separate pool or beach towels in your own service plan. State how replacement requests and longer stays are handled. Airbnb’s essentials guidance is a useful platform reference; it is not a full specification for your chosen hospitality standard. Match what you describe in the listing to what guests actually find.

An eight-towel service setup is not the whole inventory
For an illustrative four-guest property, an operator chooses two bath towels per guest: 4 × 2 = 8 bath towels for one setup. If that operator also chooses three inventory rotations, the base stock is 8 × 3 = 24 bath towels. A separately chosen 10% spare allowance makes 27 after rounding up. None of those choices is an Airbnb-mandated quantity.
| Planning stage | Example quantity | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Guest setup | 8 bath towels | Chosen allowance for one arrival |
| Three rotations | 24 bath towels | Stock policy across use and laundry |
| 10% extra spares | 27 bath towels | Optional policy including rounded contingency |
Check clean availability before each arrival
Suppose you count eight clean towels, six in use, four dirty, two in laundry and one physically present but unavailable. You have 21 accounted items, 20 potentially serviceable items and eight immediately ready. If the next arrival needs eight and you protect two as a clean reserve, the readiness gap is two. Total ownership has not made those two towels clean.
Record actual receipts and inspection results. Dirty and in-laundry items can support future rotations, but should not be moved into the clean column merely because a wash has started.
Build the towel service around cleaning time and storage
Airbnb’s cleanliness guidance supports fresh, clean guest bedding and towels between stays. Plan collection and laundry early enough to inspect and replace stained or damaged items. The supplier checklist can help organise stock by type and size, but it cannot determine your exact quantity without your service choices and turnaround.

Check your calculation
Do towels provided to guests include the spare stock in storage?
Keep those numbers separate. The guest allowance describes the ready service setup; inventory includes the rotations and contingency needed to maintain it.
Should I use maximum occupancy for every booking?
Use the service setup actually required and confirmed guest counts where known. If occupancy is unresolved, confirm it rather than silently treating every stay as full occupancy.
