Why does my fitted sheet keep coming off?

Check sheet width, length, mattress-and-topper depth, orientation and elastic before buying replacements or straps. Work through a practical fit diagnosis.

Start with this check

Start by checking the sheet’s width, length and intended mattress-depth range against your assembled bed, including any topper. A shallow pocket, wrong footprint, poor seating or worn elastic can leave corners unsecured. “King” and “deep pocket” labels alone do not confirm the fit.

Find the dimension that is failing

Width and length

Measure the mattress footprint, then compare the sheet’s intended bed size.

Total assembled depth

Measure mattress plus topper and protector. Exclude the bed base.

Maker’s fit range

Compare the intended mattress-depth range, not only sewn pocket depth.

Original schematic, not to product scale. If all dimensions match, inspect the elastic, corner seating and product-specific instructions before buying accessories.

Find which dimension or corner is failing

Strip the bed far enough to inspect all four corners. Confirm orientation, the exact sheet range and its stated footprint. A deeper pocket cannot compensate for the wrong width or length. If a topper was added recently, remeasure the assembled bed rather than using the original mattress depth.

Measure the mattress and topper together

For an illustrative bed, a 28 cm mattress plus a 5 cm topper gives a nominal 33 cm total, before any appreciable padded layer. Check that against a measurement of the assembled surface. A sheet sold for mattresses up to 30 cm would not match that 33 cm requirement.

Compare intended mattress fit, not just sewn fabric depth. Belledorm’s named 38 cm fabric-depth sheet, for example, specifies accommodation up to 30 cm. The difference reflects that product’s construction; it is not a universal allowance to subtract from other sheets.

Re-seat the sheet before adding accessories

Fit the sheet in the intended orientation, with each corner seated and the elastic positioned as the maker intends. Check whether a bulky layer is preventing it from reaching underneath. If the material is stretched taut before all corners are in place, return to the dimension check. Retainers cannot supply missing fabric or make a wrong regional footprint correct.

Inspect elastic, seams and the care label. If the sheet fitted before laundering and now differs, compare actual dimensions and the product’s care instructions; do not assume a particular shrinkage percentage without evidence.

Keep a replacement record that solves the same problem

Write down width, length, complete depth, topper configuration and the maker’s supported mattress range. Keep the old product details if it fitted well. Ask the seller about the complete arrangement if a listing only says deep pocket. An actual fit specification is more useful than moving up a size name and hoping the extra material will stay in place.

If the problem persists

Will fitted-sheet straps fix a sheet that is too small?

Correct the dimensions first. Straps do not add fabric or establish a compatible footprint. Only consider an accessory that is suitable for the bedding and bed after resolving fit and condition.

Should I buy the deepest pocket available?

Match the maker’s intended mattress-depth range to your bed. Excess fabric can bunch, and a deep pocket still needs the correct width and length.
