Flat sheet size chart: dimensions, side drop and tuck

Compare named flat-sheet sizes in cm and inches, then calculate side coverage and check the length for your mattress, fold and tuck.

The comparison

Choose a flat sheet using its actual width and length, your mattress dimensions and the drop or tuck you want. Flat-sheet sizes vary across ranges. For an equal side extension, subtract mattress width from sheet width and divide by two; mattress depth and tucking then use part of that fabric.

Calculate the side allowance

(260 − 150) ÷ 2 = 55 cm per side. This flat-plan remainder must cover the mattress side and any desired tuck. It is not 55 cm of usable tuck.

Find the flat-sheet row, not the fitted-sheet row

A flat sheet is a rectangle of fabric with its own width and length. A fitted sheet is shaped for a mattress and also has a depth specification. Neither a fitted-sheet footprint nor a duvet-cover measurement supplies a flat sheet’s dimensions.

When comparing shops, record the brand and range beside the size name. The Company Store’s jersey sheet set, Dunelm Non Iron Plain and Sheridan reference range are separate examples. A measurement from one range should not be carried across to a different fabric or collection without checking.

Named flat-sheet dimensions in centimetres and inches

The table keeps each published example tied to its source. Some size names share a flat sheet in a particular range; that does not mean all of their other bedding pieces are interchangeable. Use these figures to compare the options, then confirm the product you select.

If your sheet is not represented, use the actual width and length from its listing. Supplying both measurements is better than combining one known dimension with a borrowed regional reference.

Measurements are rounded to two decimal places for display. Exact conversion uses 1 inch = 2.54 cm. Check the exact product, item type and intended fit before buying.

Calculate the fabric available at each side

Use this planning calculation: (sheet width − mattress width) ÷ 2. A 240 cm sheet centred on a 150 cm mattress leaves (240 − 150) ÷ 2 = 45 cm at each side, measured from the top edge of the mattress.

Now account for the depth the fabric must travel before it can tuck underneath. In an idealised example with a 30 cm vertical side, 15 cm of that 45 cm remains for an underside tuck. Rounded edges, fabric positioning and actual fit can change the result. The arithmetic explains where the fabric goes; it is not a universal recommended tuck allowance.

Plan the head and foot before deciding on length

Lay a sheet you already own in the position you like. Measure what reaches beyond the foot and what you use for a fold at the head. This gives you a personal comparison instead of a generic instruction to size up.

As a simple illustration, 260 cm of sheet length over a 200 cm mattress leaves 60 cm to distribute beyond the mattress footprint. That entire 60 cm is not automatically a foot tuck: a head fold, positioning and mattress depth may use some of it. Check the length with your intended arrangement.

  • Measure the mattress length.
  • Decide where the top edge or fold should sit.
  • Allow for the route down the foot of the mattress.
  • Compare what remains with the tuck you want.

Keep washing assumptions out of the size calculation

Read the finished sheet’s care instructions and any dimensional notes supplied by the maker. Whirlpool’s sheet-care guide distinguishes fabric treatments, which is another reason not to apply one washing routine to every sheet. No universal shrinkage percentage is built into these comparisons.

Before buying, save the published dimensions and the coverage you calculated. If either width or length is only just sufficient for your arrangement, ask the seller about intended use and care rather than treating the converter’s closest match as a guarantee.

Turn a chart measurement into a remaining tuck allowance

A 275 cm wide flat sheet centred over a 150 cm mattress leaves 62.5 cm at each side. Subtract a 30 cm mattress depth and 32.5 cm remains beyond each side in this simplified plan. Decide the head fold and foot tuck separately from the sheet length.

Can I use a larger flat sheet on a smaller bed?

Compare the dimensions with your preferred arrangement. More width or length changes the fabric you need to position, fold or tuck. A larger size name alone does not tell you whether that result will suit you.

Sources and scope

Dimensions describe the named market and product range, not universal fit. Compare your exact item measurements and the manufacturer’s intended fit range before buying. Report a correction with the page and supporting source.
