How to measure fitted sheet depth, including a mattress topper

Measure mattress width, length and total depth, then distinguish a fitted sheet’s pocket measurement from its stated mattress fit range.

The comparison

Measure the width and length of your mattress, then the full depth the fitted sheet will cover, including a topper or pad. Compare those figures with the exact sheet’s specification and intended mattress-depth range. A sewn pocket measurement and a “fits up to” claim can describe different things.

Include the topper in the depth the sheet must cover

An illustrative 28 cm mattress with a 6 cm topper Measure vertically from the mattress lower edge to the top of the topper. The example totals 34 centimetres. The bed base below the mattress is excluded. Topper · 6 cm Mattress · 28 cm 34 cm total

28 cm mattress + 6 cm topper = 34 cm nominal depth. Check the assembled measurement with a straight tape, from the lower mattress edge to the top surface.

Then compare the exact sheet’s intended mattress fit range. Sewn pocket depth can describe something different.

For example, Belledorm’s named 38 cm pocket sheet is specified for mattresses up to 30 cm deep. That range would not cover this illustrative 34 cm requirement.

Illustrative dimensions, not a measured product test. Do not add a universal tuck allowance to every brand: use the maker’s stated fit range and check width and length too.

Set up the bed as you will use it

Remove loose bedding and the sheet you are replacing. Leave on the topper or pad if the new fitted sheet will go over it. Measure the mattress width and length rather than the outside of the bed frame. Then measure the complete depth from the lower mattress edge the sheet must cover to the top of the sleeping surface.

Keep the tape straight and record the units. If you use the bed with and without a topper, record both arrangements. A measurement taken before a topper was added no longer describes the same fitting job. Mattress guides from Casper and Sealy also refer to the mattress itself, rather than the outside dimensions of a bed frame.

Add the layers, then measure the assembled depth

Suppose a mattress is 28 cm deep and a topper is 6 cm. The nominal total is 34 cm. Use that as a check against your measurement of the assembled arrangement. The figure you need is the depth the sheet will actually enclose.

That 34 cm is a measured requirement, not an instruction to buy a particular pocket. A generic rule to add a fixed number of centimetres cannot account for every sheet’s fabric, elastic and construction. Take the measured depth to the exact product’s intended fit guidance.

Read “pocket depth” and “fits up to” separately

The Company Store’s jersey sheet listing gives a 14-inch pocket in its size information and says the fitted sheets accommodate mattresses up to 16 inches deep. That is a useful example of two descriptions serving different purposes. The sewn dimension alone does not capture the maker’s stated accommodation.

Use the intended mattress range as well as the pocket specification. If a listing says only “deep pocket” or offers a sewn measurement without explaining intended fit, ask the seller about your complete mattress arrangement. Avoid importing another range’s stretch or depth claim.

A three-dimension check before you buy

A deep pocket does not fix a width or length mismatch. Copy the sheet’s selected size into the same note as the measurements of your bed. Mark each check separately so an encouraging depth claim does not hide the wrong footprint.

For example, a listing might state the depth range you need while referring to a king sold in a different country. Check the actual width and length before deciding that the shared name is enough.

  • Mattress width versus the selected sheet’s intended width.
  • Mattress length versus the selected sheet’s intended length.
  • Full covered depth versus the maker’s mattress-depth guidance.
  • Product range, fabric and exact size selected.

Keep a record when you replace an existing sheet

If your current sheet works well, save its range and label details alongside the bed measurements. If it pulls off, note which corners or edges move and recheck all three dimensions before buying another. This guide cannot diagnose every cause of a sheet slipping.

Read the new sheet’s care instructions too. A size comparison cannot predict shrinkage or establish a washing temperature. Whirlpool’s fabric-specific sheet guidance is a useful starting reference; the finished product label supplies the instructions for your actual purchase.

A step-by-step depth record to take to the seller

Belledorm’s named 38 cm fabric-depth fitted sheet is designed for mattresses up to 30 cm deep. That is a product-specific fit claim, not a rule to subtract 8 cm from every pocket. Take the assembled bed depth to the seller’s supported range, using the record below.

Keep a measurement you can check next time

Record the exact product, date, measuring method and actual reading. Keep a label photograph and the relevant manual page with it. A measured dry weight or dimension is useful evidence for your own item; a wash or fit result needs its own observation.

Is a deep-pocket king sheet suitable for any king mattress?

Check all three dimensions. King footprints differ between markets, while deep pocket does not supply a universal numerical fit range. Confirm width, length and total mattress depth against the exact selected product.

Sources and scope

Dimensions describe the named market and product range, not universal fit. Compare your exact item measurements and the manufacturer’s intended fit range before buying. Report a correction with the page and supporting source.
