Read bedding care symbols for washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional care as separate instructions. A wash number gives a maximum temperature; bars can require gentler treatment. Washing permission does not permit tumble drying. Read the written notes and check the filled insert and removable cover independently.

- Match the wash temperature and required treatment together.
- Check drying permission before starting the wash.

Read the label on the insert, cover or sheet you mean
Before choosing a cycle, identify the item in your hands. The filled duvet, its removable cover and the fitted sheet can have different instructions even when they came from one bedding collection. Keep each label with its own component.
GINETEX explains the care-symbol system, while Bosch gives European consumer descriptions. Regional labels may also use written instructions. This page describes the symbols in words; keep the actual label or a clear photograph beside it when checking a meaning.

Common bedding label descriptions at a glance
Use this table to locate the instruction you are trying to understand. Read the whole label afterwards. Recognising one familiar shape does not supply permission for the other stages of care. If a symbol is unclear, leave that question open and ask the bedding maker.
| Text description | Meaning | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Wash tub with a number | Maximum washing temperature in °C | Bars and written treatment instructions |
| One bar beneath the wash tub | Mild washing process | A compatible mild programme and its load limit |
| Two bars beneath the wash tub | Very mild process with reduced load | The exact programme and permitted quantity |
| Crossed-out wash tub | Do not wash | Ask about an explicitly permitted alternative |
| Circle inside a square | Tumble-drying instruction | Dots, written notes and appliance requirements |
| Crossed-out circle inside a square | Do not tumble dry | A separate permitted drying method |

A wash temperature is only part of the instruction
The number inside a wash tub gives the maximum washing temperature in degrees Celsius. Bars below the tub qualify the process: one indicates mild treatment and two indicate very mild treatment. You need a compatible appliance programme as well as a suitable temperature.
Imagine a label that specifies a maximum 40 °C mild wash. Selecting 40 °C on an unrelated programme does not establish that its mechanical treatment matches. Check your machine manual for the programme and load allowed for the item. A crossed-out wash tub is a prohibition; choosing cold water does not cancel it.

Read drying before you wet the bedding
A circle inside a square concerns tumble drying. A crossed-out version prohibits that method; dots qualify an allowed temperature. Flat, line and shade drying descriptions concern different arrangements. Read any written requirement about supporting the item or keeping it away from direct heat.
For an illustrative label that permits mild washing but prohibits tumble drying, the dryer is still excluded after a successful wash. Confirm a separate permitted drying route before you begin. Washing permission alone leaves that practical question unanswered.

Bleach, ironing and professional care need their own checks
A stain does not cancel a bleach restriction, and a crumpled sheet does not cancel an ironing prohibition. Read those parts of the label before adding a treatment to your normal routine. A plain-language wash note is incomplete if it leaves out relevant restrictions.
Professional-care instructions belong with the information you give a cleaner. Do not turn the letters on a label into a recipe for using solvents at home. If the printed symbols and written directions appear contradictory, ask the maker with a photograph instead of selecting whichever method is easiest.

Save a care note you can act on
The care label decoder helps translate matching text descriptions. Keep its interpretation beside the original label and your appliance instructions. For bulky bedding, use the fit checker only after establishing washing permission; the decoder cannot inspect the drum or confirm an unspecified programme.
A useful saved note is short enough to read before the next wash and specific enough to identify the actual item.
- Name the component: insert, cover or sheet.
- Record washing permission, temperature and treatment.
- Record drying method and any heat or support limits.
- Include bleach, ironing and professional-care restrictions.
- Keep any unanswered question with the maker’s reply.
Choose the bedding component before using a symbol meaning
Identify the meanings on the label for the component you will clean. Then use the whole-label guide to combine washing, bleaching, drying and finishing into one plan, including all written notes.
| Text description | Meaning in the cited GINETEX reference | Before treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Empty triangle | Chlorine or oxygen bleach permitted | Keep the item’s other instructions and the treatment product directions in force |
| Triangle with two oblique lines | Oxygen bleach only; no chlorine bleach | Match the permitted product type |
| Crossed-out triangle | Do not bleach | Choose a compatible bleach-free process |
| Tumble-drying circle in a square, one dot | Mild drying process with reduced heat | Confirm the permitted dryer setting and item instructions |
| Tumble-drying circle in a square, two dots | Normal tumble-drying process | Check the appliance’s compatible programme and load |
| Iron with one dot, in the cited ISO 3758:2023 system | Maximum soleplate temperature 120°C | Observe a separate no-steam instruction where shown |
| Iron with two dots, in the cited ISO 3758:2023 system | Maximum soleplate temperature 160°C | Keep any written finishing restrictions |
| Iron with three dots, in the cited ISO 3758:2023 system | Maximum soleplate temperature 210°C | The symbol gives a maximum, not a target for every item |
| Crossed-out iron | Do not iron | A lower setting does not override the prohibition |
| Circle with professional-care letters | Instructions for a professional cleaner | Give the cleaner the complete label; do not translate letters into home solvent recipes |

Questions before you start
Does a 40 °C symbol mean I can use any 40 °C programme?
No. Read any bars and written treatment instructions as well as the temperature. Match the required process to your appliance manual and check its permitted load. The temperature setting alone does not establish the correct mechanical treatment.
Can I tumble dry a duvet if machine washing is allowed?
Only when its separate drying instructions permit it and the appliance can accommodate it as instructed. A washable duvet can still prohibit tumble drying. Plan the permitted drying route before the duvet is wet.
Does the duvet cover label also apply to the insert?
Check them separately. A removable cover and a filled insert are different finished products. Their fibres, filling, trim and construction may carry different washing and drying instructions even when the dimensions match.
