Read a care label as a complete set of conditions, checking washing, bleach, drying, ironing and professional care independently. Keep all relevant limits and prohibitions in force. A permitted wash temperature cannot override “do not wash”, and a wash allowance does not grant tumble-drying permission.
Open care label decoder- Write one instruction for each stage of care.
- Keep a prohibition even when another selected instruction looks permissive.
- Ask the maker about an unclear or contradictory actual label.

Make one care plan from several instructions
A label can allow one operation and prohibit another without being contradictory. A washable shirt may need drying flat; a bedding cover may allow washing while restricting bleach. Reading only the first familiar instruction leaves the plan unfinished.
GINETEX describes separate care stages. Start by transcribing the finished product’s instructions into those stages, including written notes. Keep the fibre content nearby, but do not use “cotton”, “wool” or another fibre name to replace what the item’s actual label says.

Work through a complete example
Consider a hypothetical label with a maximum 30 °C mild wash, no bleach, no tumble drying, dry flat and no ironing. Your plan needs the allowed temperature and mild treatment, excludes bleach and the dryer, and includes flat drying. Finishing a permitted wash does not open up the prohibited steps.
Compare that plan with the controls on your machine. A cycle displaying 30 °C has answered the temperature question only. Its treatment and relevant load limit still need to match. If the appliance cannot provide the permitted route, ask the product or appliance maker before choosing a substitute.

Keep restrictions attached to the operation they govern
Avoid compressing the label into a vague note such as “gentle care”. That loses the difference between washing treatment, drying method and heat restrictions. The most useful note says what is allowed at each stage and what must be left out.
For example, an item that permits low tumble drying can still prohibit ironing. Lowering the iron setting is not a way to obey “do not iron”. Likewise, using a cold wash does not convert a crossed-out wash instruction into permission.
- Washing: permission, maximum temperature and required process.
- Bleaching: whether it is allowed and any restriction.
- Drying: permitted method, heat and support instructions.
- Ironing: permission and stated conditions.
- Professional care: information for the cleaner.

What a contradictory decoder selection means
The WashSage decoder prioritises prohibitions when selected descriptions conflict. Choosing both a tumble allowance and “do not tumble dry” does not produce a compromise heat setting: the prohibition stays in force. A temperature choice cannot override “do not wash”.
That is a conservative interpretation of your selections, not evidence that a contradictory physical label has been resolved. Recheck the photograph for a missed cross, bar or written note. If the actual product instructions still disagree, send the maker the complete label and product details.
Finish the plan before starting a treatment
Read the stain-remover or detergent instructions alongside the item label. A product’s directions are useful only when that product is compatible with the item and the permitted care route. Woolmark’s advice on suitable wool detergent illustrates why a generic liquid is not a substitute for every fabric requirement.
Save the photograph and the final plain-language plan together. If you hand the item to a professional, include all the instructions rather than supplying only the wash temperature. Professional-care letters guide a cleaner; they are not home solvent instructions.

Check a complete plan with a stage-by-stage handoff
Pass the complete care record to whoever performs the next stage. For the 30°C mild-wash example, the handoff must still say no bleach, no tumble drying and dry flat. If the record and label disagree, resolve that stage before treatment.
| Stage in this example | Recorded instruction |
|---|---|
| Wash | Maximum 30°C and mild treatment |
| Bleach | Excluded |
| Dry | Flat; tumble drying excluded |
| Unclear instruction | Ask the maker before that operation |

Questions before you start
What should I do if the symbols and written words disagree?
Recheck the entire label, then ask the maker with a clear photograph and exact product details. Do not resolve a real contradiction by choosing the easier method. Keep the disputed operation on hold until the instructions are clarified.
Does washing permission include stain pretreatment?
Check the item’s restrictions and the treatment product’s directions together. A washable label does not establish compatibility with every bleach, solvent or detergent. Use only a route permitted for the finished item and the exact treatment product.
What happens if I choose conflicting descriptions in the decoder?
The decoder keeps prohibitions in force. Review your selections against the actual label. The result explains the selected descriptions; it cannot confirm that you identified every symbol correctly or settle an unclear manufacturer instruction.
