Free laundry tool

Laundry running cost calculator

Estimate metered cost per wash, week and year from your electricity, water and tariffs.

Free · No account needed Method & sources

Before you start

Programme electricity and water use, plus the unit prices on your utility bill.

What you’ll get

Metered cost per wash, per week and over 52 weeks, with optional dryer electricity.

Starting values are examples. Fixed charges, detergent and maintenance are excluded.

Preparing your tool…
My Laundry Setup · optional, saved on this browser

Save appliance details, tariffs or measurements you want to reuse. No account is needed. Applying a setup is always your choice; check your exact model and product before using a saved specification.

Create a setup

Empty fields stay unknown. Changing a unit clears its value so it cannot be reinterpreted accidentally. Editing a published value makes it a manual entry.

Put your own prices into the wash.

The starting values are editable examples, not published appliance measurements. Use your machine’s programme data and your utility bill.

Use zero if you air-dry. This estimate assumes drying each wash.
Use zero if wastewater is already included in the water tariff; do not count it twice.

Includes metered electricity and water charges only. Fixed fees, detergent, maintenance and heating water outside the appliance are excluded.

Compare a second scenario

Scenario A uses the inputs above. Start B with a copy, then change a programme, tariff or drying choice. Both scenarios use the same currency and water units; no exchange rates or live tariffs are assumed.

How this tool works

Entered electricity use times price per kWh, plus entered water use divided by 1,000 times its tariff. Optional dryer use is included for each wash. A year is 52 weeks. Starting values are editable assumptions, not appliance measurements. Water units remain separate.

The numerical limits on form fields are validation bounds, not recommended appliance settings. Missing data is not permission to proceed.

Using this tool

Estimate laundry running costs from electricity and water used per wash and your own tariffs. Optional dryer electricity is included for each planned load. The calculator shows per-load, weekly and 52-week totals in your selected currency, excluding fixed fees, detergent, maintenance and appliance purchase costs.

Use consumption and prices from the same scenario

Enter measured consumption or identify the exact programme’s published figures and conditions. Energy labels describe specific test conditions rather than every programme. The starting values are editable examples. Keep electricity and water prices in the selected currency; changing the currency label does not exchange the entered amounts.

Use litres with a tariff per 1,000 litres, or US gallons with the corresponding gallon tariff. Re-enter values after changing water units. If you enter combined wash-and-dry energy, do not add the dryer use a second time. Gas drying and externally heated water require costs outside the electricity-only dryer entry.

The cost-per-wash formula

Electricity cost is kWh multiplied by price per kWh. Water cost is water used divided by 1,000, multiplied by its tariff per 1,000 units. Add the optional dryer electricity cost.

An illustrative wash using 0.8 kWh at 0.30 and 50 litres at 2.00 per 1,000 litres costs 0.24 + 0.10 = 0.34. Five such washes per week cost 1.70 weekly and 88.40 over 52 weeks. These example figures are not appliance measurements or current utility prices.

Common questions

Does the annual result predict my full utility bill?

No. It estimates the entered metered laundry consumption over 52 weeks. Fixed charges and other household use are excluded.

What if I dry only some loads?

The entered dryer consumption is applied to every planned wash. Compare separate scenarios for machine-dried and other loads.

Where should I get tariff values?

Use your own billing information and applicable variable charges. The site does not supply live regional tariffs.
