Use the load limit for the programme your laundry requires, even when it is lower than the capacity printed on the machine. Specialist programmes have their own treatment and loading conditions. Check the exact model’s table and notes; a larger cotton allowance does not authorise the same load on bedding or wool.

Find the right row before filling the drum
Begin with the item label. Identify the treatment it allows, then locate a suitable programme in your model’s manual. Read across the whole row: load, temperature, fabric or item restrictions and any linked notes. A maximum-load column alone is an incomplete instruction.
Samsung’s general UK cycle guide provides a clear example of differing allowances: its bedding description calls for a load below 2 kg, while other programmes have different limits. Samsung also directs readers to the exact model manual. Use the example to understand the distinction, not as a specification for another machine.

Work through a load that exceeds the programme
Imagine your appliance is advertised as 9 kg. You confirm that the required programme allows 2 kg, then measure the intended dry item at 2.6 kg. The relevant comparison is 2.6 kg against 2 kg: it exceeds the allowance by 0.6 kg. The unused portion of the 9 kg headline rating does not create extra permission.
For a basket of separate, compatible garments, you may be able to remove items and reweigh the smaller group. For one filled duvet, you cannot split the filling into smaller washes. Check for another route permitted by both the item maker and the appliance maker.

Do not change treatment just to raise the limit
A higher-capacity programme is useful only if it is appropriate for the textiles. Moving a restricted item to cotton, increasing the temperature or ignoring a gentle-treatment requirement changes more than the maximum weight.
If the label and manual permit a genuine alternative, check that programme’s complete instructions afresh. If they do not, keep the lower limit. A weight calculator can show whether the arithmetic works; it cannot decide that a prohibited treatment is acceptable.

Write down wash and dry allowances separately
A washer-dryer’s washing specification does not necessarily describe an uninterrupted wash-and-dry load. Energy Saving Trust distinguishes the wash-only and wash-and-dry information shown on labels. The exact appliance instructions determine what may remain in the drum for drying.
Before starting, make a short record of the route. It is easier to resolve a missing drying allowance while the laundry is still dry than after washing a bulky item.
- Machine model and the complete programme name.
- Maximum dry load and any selected-option restrictions.
- Permission for the fabric, filling and construction.
- Separate dryer or combined-cycle allowance and drying method.

When the manual still leaves a question
Check footnotes, option tables and supplementary instructions before assuming the figure is absent. If the answer remains unclear, send the manufacturer the model number, programme name and a photograph of the item’s label. Ask about the construction as well as its measured mass.
Leave an unknown allowance unknown in the meantime. Substituting the front-panel rating produces a tidy comparison with an unsupported premise. Once the correct limit is confirmed, enter it in the weight calculator and check the loading arrangement separately.
A manufacturer programme-table comparison
Samsung’s general UK guide gives different allowances by programme, as shown below. MAX refers to the applicable model; the table is an example of how to read programme limits. Find your own manual’s row and notes before comparing a real load.
| Samsung general example | Listed load entry | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton | MAX | Find the applicable model maximum |
| Synthetics | 4 kg | Example for that described programme |
| Wool | 2 kg | Check item and model restrictions |
| Bedding | Less than 2 kg | Not the washer’s headline rating |

Questions about fit and measurements
Can I fill a gentle cycle to the machine’s full capacity?
Only when the exact model instructions permit that amount on the required gentle programme. A cotton or eco allowance does not automatically apply to wool, delicates, quick wash or bedding. Check the programme and any options you select together.
Does automatic load sensing replace the programme limit?
Follow the stated maximum and item restrictions even when the appliance adjusts a cycle automatically. Do not treat a sensor or a cycle that starts successfully as permission to exceed the instructions.
Which number should I enter in the laundry weight calculator?
Enter the confirmed dry-load limit for the programme you will use. Compare it with the complete dry laundry total. If the manual value is unknown, the calculator can still add weights, but it cannot provide a verified capacity check.
